New Employee Orientation

Prior to your first day, your recruiter will provide you with an offer letter to include the official date and time of your scheduled New Employee Orientation. Please review the information below to learn more about the orientation process.

Your First Day as a new Howard University Employee

Throughout your first few weeks as a Howard University employee, you will experience opportunities and benefits of our diverse community. Your colleagues across the university are here to support you during your first weeks and during your Howard career. Wherever you find yourself working across HU’s campuses, our community will welcome you to our team of groundbreaking and vibrant individuals. As a new hire you will begin your first day at Howard University in new hire orientation where you will be briefed on information about Howard University and employment at Howard University. You will also be given pertinent information regarding the following policies and procedures:

  • Human Resources
  • Title IX
  • Sexual Harassment
  • EEO
  • Safety
  • Internet Security
  • Benefits

Parking and Transportation

Depending on your start date, the location of orientation may vary. Please be sure to review your welcome email to determine specific time, location and parking instructions.

Driving: Limited street parking is available near campus, so please allow time to search for an available space. You may also utilize the visitor parking lot at a rate of $10/day. The entrance to the Howard Center Lot is located on 8th St. NW. To purchase a visitor permit in advance, visit

Metro: The closest Metro stations to campus are Shaw/Howard University or U Street/Cardozo (depending on the orientation location). Please click for a campus map and Shuttle Schedule.

Attire and Schedule

  • All new hires should dress in attire suitable for your workspace. Please ask your supervisor if you need more information.  
  • It is recommended for new hires to bring a sweater to Orientation as room temperatures may vary.
  • All new employees will take a picture for their ID badge directly following orientation. 
  • The session runs bi-weekly from 9:00am-3:00pm.
    • Please arrive by 8:50am
    • If you have any questions or should experience an unavoidable emergency that prevents you from attending, please contact Human Resources at (202) 806-1280. Any non-attendance without prior notification will postpone your first day of work.

Hospital Orientation

University employees who work in the hospital may require additional training. Please ask your supervisor for more information.
