Leave of Absence
Howard values the time you invest at the university. We invite you to explore your paid time off and unpaid leave options that aim to help you manage medical needs for you and your family. The University provides various types of Leave of Absences in the event you experience a personal or medical need. In all cases, you will need to seek prior approval of the leave by notifying MetLife and submitting a claim.
Leaves of absences for yourself are granted for the following reasons:
- Personal medical condition (not work-related)
- Pregnancy related
- Work related illness or injury (Workers’ Compensation)
- Short-Term Disability (STD)
- Long-Term Disability (LTD)
- Personal reasons
- Military duty
Benefits While on Leave
You may continue your benefits if on an approved Leave of Absence and in a paid status once your leave commences. If your status changes to Leave Without Pay (LWOP), it is the employee’s responsibility to make monthly medical and dental premium payments to the University’s Benefits Lockbox by the 15th of the month. You will receive a notice from the Benefits Department after 30 days of non-payment and your benefits will be terminated effective the end of the month that payment was not received.
