Short-Term Disability (STD)

Short-Term Disability insurance plan provides coverage if you cannot work due to a non-occupational injury or illness. Eligible employees are provided with employer-paid STD. If you have an illness that prevents you from working for an extended time, disability coverage will provide you some income. Howard provides STD benefits up to 50% of your base pay for up to 22 weeks, not to exceed $1,000 per week maximum. Payments begin after 30 continuous days of illness or injury.

  1. Runs consecutively with your Continuous FMLA.
  2. Employees must apply for Short-Term Disability with MetLife.
  3. Beginning on day 31, the employee can supplement the additional 50 percent of pay, by using four (4) hours of sick/annual leave per day while on Short-Term Disability.
  4. The maximum amount of time you are eligible to receive Short-Term Disability is 22 weeks.
  5. If you are eligible for Short-Term Disability, you will receive payment after you have been on leave for 30 days.

Long-Term Disability (LTD)

Long-Term Disability insurance plan provides coverage if you cannot return to work after a Short Term Disability (STD) due to an illness or injury. Eligible employees are provided with employer-paid LTD. If you have an illness that prevents you from working for an extended time, disability coverage will provide you some income. LTD coverage will pay up to 60% of your base pay until you are no longer disabled, or until you reach Social Security age. The maximum monthly payment is $10,000. LTD benefits may begin after six months of continuous disability.

    • All eligible employees are automatically covered under the LTD Insurance plan at no cost after the first day of the calendar month following the date you complete the waiting period of 12 months..
  • Benefit Description
    • Long-Term Disability (LTD) benefits replace a portion of your income if you become ill or injured and cannot work. You may apply for LTD benefits when experiencing work-related or non-work-related injuries or illnesses that are expected to extend beyond the Short-Term Disability period.
  • Requesting a Leave of Absence
    • Steps to take to apply:
      • Approximately 30 calendar days prior to the completion of the 22 weeks of Short-Term Disability, a MetLife claims representative will reach out to you directly to review any eligible LTD benefits.
      • The MetLife claims representative will work directly with you and your physician to transition to LTD.
