History and Legacy
The Association of Howard University Retirees (AHUR) was established in 1977 through the vision and leadership of two Howard University employees: Ms. Idella M. Ford, RN, Freedmen’s Hospital and Mrs. Marian V. Coombs, a Placement Officer at the Howard University. AHUR was initially organized to advocate for retiree pensions. Since its founding, AHUR has provided opportunities for fellowship, lifelong learning, service, and advocacy. The Association continues to honor the contributions of retired faculty and staff while supporting Howard University's mission of excellence in education, research, and service.
Mission Statement
The Association of Howard University Retirees is dedicated to honoring the expertise, legacy, and continuing contributions of its members by fostering a vibrant and supportive community. The Association serves as an engaged steward of institutional knowledge, working to protect the interests of retirees and to advance Howard University’s enduring commitment to excellence, scholarship, and service to its students, faculty, and staff.
Organizational Objectives
AHUR seeks to:
- To form a cohesive, non-profit organization of all Howard University retired personnel.
- To improve communication between retirees and Howard University Administration.
- To provide scholarship funds for deserving Howard University students.
- To provide cultural and social events that enhance the well-being of association members through travel, sports, dance, theatrics and other social activities for enjoyment.
- To provide opportunities for the continued education of retirees in areas of interest: health, finance, housing, interpersonal relationships, legal issues, etc.
- To serve as goodwill ambassadors for Howard University.

During an oral history interview with the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center director Dr. Sinnette and founder Idella Ford recalled the presidency of Dr. James K. Hill, describing him as a “young blood” who brought renewed energy and innovation to the organization. Under his leadership, AHUR expanded its programming to include discussions on cost-of-living issues and presentations by University administrators to the Association.
Membership and Governance
Membership is open to:
- Retired faculty and staff of Howard University and Howard University Hospital.
- Association members, including active Howard University employees, spouses, widows, widowers, and friends of retirees. AHUR originally met monthly on the fourth Saturday of the month. In October 2007, members voted to transition to four annual meetings beginning in 2008, held on the fourth Saturday of each month March, April September and October.

Annual dues were initially $10.00 per year and increased to $15 in 2003. Current annual dues are $25 per year.
The President and Vice President are elected to two-year terms and may serve no more than two consecutive terms.
Programs and Activities
Over the years, AHUR has sponsored educational, cultural, and social programs that enrich the lives of its members.
For many years, the Association hosted an annual spring brunch featuring distinguished guest speakers. One notable speaker was Howard University alumna and acclaimed author Breena Clarke, whose novel, River, Cross My Heart was selected by Oprah’s Book Club.
In 2016, the Programs and Activities Committee launched a retirees reunion luncheon under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Clara L. Guyton. This tradition continues, the 49th Annual Luncheon took place on May 16, 2026, chaired by Barbra Wiggins Matthew and co-chair Betty Gladden. It continues to bring retirees together in celebration of their shared connection to Howard University.
Communications
From 2002 through 2010 AHUR published a newsletter distributed to members. Mrs. Alvah Sims, who served as Secretary from 2000 to 2016, played a key editorial role in its production. She succeeded Marea Wilson, who previously served as secretary.
Archives and Historical Preservation
The original AHUR Constitution and Bylaws were drafted by Idella M. Ford, Harold Lewis and Emory Smith.
The revised 2005 Constitution and By-Laws established the role of Historian, charged with preserving the Association’s history through photographs, documents, recordings, artifacts, and other archival materials. The Historian is responsible for maintaining records and educating members about the organization’s legacy.
The Manuscript Division of the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center of Howard University maintains archival records documenting AHUR’s history. Dr. Ida E. Jones of the Manuscript Division has some record of the Association for the years 1978–1987 and recommended that the Association records be deposited regularly (at the end of each Association year or the end of the term of the President) to ensure preservation of AHUR’s institutional history for future generations.
Looking Forward
Under the leadership of the new president of AHUR, Dr. Clint Walker, AHUR is expanding its digital presence and strengthening engagement with current and future retirees. Key initiatives include developing a dedicated presence on Howard University’s website, improving communications about upcoming meetings and events, increasing participation in Association activities, and growing membership. He encourages any retiree who believes in the mission to step forward and join us.
Acknowledgements
Frances C. Zeigler, was elected Historian in May 2012, is recognized for her significant contributions to preserving the Association’s history. During her tenure, she compiled and submitted historical records to the Howard University Moorland-Spingarn Research Center, helping to safeguard AHUR’s legacy.
Mary Jones Bryant, AHUR’s longest-serving present (2016–2025), provided exceptional leadership during the COVID pandemic. Under her administration AHUR members continued to support Howard University through volunteer services, including welcoming incoming students on move-in day; providing ushers at commencement and Charter Day events; supporting homecoming activities, and assisting with mailings in the Office of Benefits and other University departments.
