If you have questions or need guidance, reach out to us at learning@howard.edu.

Your First Week

After orientation day, you’ll begin working with your team. Communicate with your manager to identify your initial assignments, the purpose of your work, how it fits into your department or school's overarching mission and goals, and how you can begin making immediate contributions.

Also, complete the following tasks:

  • Review the benefits information and reach out to benefits@howard.edu with any questions.
  • Ask your manager about the availability of parking permits (if applicable).
  • Set up your personal workspace.
  • Take a Campus Tour.
  • Talk with your manager about department specific safety information.
  • Ask your manager about appropriate workplace attire.

Your First 30 Days

30 days is a good time to check in with your manager about your performance. You will also need to complete the following:

  • Finalize your benefits enrollments. Keep in mind that you must enroll in a health care plan within your first 30 days of employment or you will need to wait until the next open enrollment period.
  • New Hire Orientation/ Recruitment Survey
  • HIPAA (If you your department falls in the compliance training category)

90 Days

By day 90 you should be pretty acclimated in your role and prepared to get performance feedback from your manager. At some point in this time period you will be invited to a New Employee Roundtable. This will allow us to check in with you to see how things are going and to answer any remaining questions that you may have as you move forward at Howard University.
